Chatting with strangers can be fun and harmless, as long as you keep a few simple rules in mind. Here’s how to protect yourself, and what ChatStranger does behind the scenes.
Golden rules
- Never share personal details: full name, address, school, workplace, phone number or social media handles.
- Never send money, gift cards or UPI payments to someone you met in a chat, whatever story they tell.
- Don’t move to another app just because a stranger asks you to.
- Never share photos you wouldn’t want the whole internet to see.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, skip.
What ChatStranger does to protect you
- 18+ only: everyone confirms they are an adult before chatting.
- Report button in every chat. Reporting ends the chat instantly.
- Automatic blocking: people reported by several different users are blocked from chatting.
- Links are blocked in messages, which stops most scam and spam bots.
- Message limits stop people flooding a chat.
- Nobody can edit or delete messages, so reports can’t be covered up.
If something goes wrong
If someone threatens you, pressures you for money or photos, or you believe a child is at risk, stop chatting, report them, and contact your local police or cybercrime helpline. In India you can report cybercrime at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.
